Keep Swing Sets Safe for Your Kids

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

You want your kids to have fun but you also want to keep them safe. At times these two impulses will be in opposition to each other. Sometimes it will seem that the only way for them to have fun is to put themselves in some kind of danger or risk. Once you make your peace with that fact, you will relieve yourself of a lot of anxiety and be able to enjoy your kids playtime .

If you have a backyard swing set, there are steps you can take to keep the equipment safe for your kids. You’ll want to have rules for using the swings and other equipment in place. Many accidents are the result of kids using playground equipment improperly. However, there is also a risk of the equipment breaking and it is your responsibility to prevent that from happening.

A weekly inspection of the set, swings and hardware will go a long way towards catching potential problems and fixing them before something bad happens. You’ll want to keep all the swing set parts clean and in good working condition. The owner’s manual that came with the set should give you instructions on how to do that. It should also tell you how to replace parts and where to buy those replacements.
