French Legation Museum in Austin

Monday, June 28th, 2010

There is so much to do and see in Austin, Texas, that it’s possible to visit this city off and on for decades and still not get to all the places one should; quickly, you might develop favorite places, such as Magnolia’s, a 24-hour breakfast restaurant in two locations, or Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on the shores of Lake Austin, and never strike out and explore the history of this university town, and its historically rich museums, such as the French Legation museum .

In 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico, and Sam Houston officially became the first President of the Republic of Texas. Three years later, King Louis Phillipe of France sent a representative to investigate whether or not Texas should become recognized as a sovereign nation; this representative was Jean Pierre Isador Alphonse Dubois de Saligny, who was a secretary at the French Legation in Washington DC.

By September of 1839, Dubois was instrumental in a Treaty of Amity, Navigation and Commerce with Texas, recognizing it as an independent nation; he was promoted to “charge d’affaires” to the Republic of Texas, and when the capital of Texas moved from Houston to a city known as Waterloo, and later as Austin, he moved with it. In the mid-1800s, Austin consisted of little more than some log cabins and tents and unpaved streets. In 1841, though, the French Legation house had been built; however, Dubois left Austin before he could move in.

Then, as history and politics continued their course, the capital moved again to Houston, then the country of Texas became a state of the union, and all French diplomats left for Washington DC; however, the home remained, serving as the residence of private families well into the 1940s. The last family owned the home for over a hundred years, and decided to turn the building into a museum, selling the house to Texas in 1949.

From 1952 to the present, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas have been responsible for preserving this historic residence, and have made an effort to make sure the place is an accurate reflection of the Dubois and Robertson eras. At the museum, you’ll discover a French country kitchen, with eighteenth and nineteenth century equipment.

The French Legation Museum is a place for reunions, parties, fundraisers, or, if you’re of a romantic frame of mind, weddings. Have your own wedding on the gardens, lawns, or veranda of this historic site, then retire to one of several Austin boutique hotels for the honeymoon. Such an experience could only increase your appreciation for this great city.

What to Do With The Kitchen

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

The kitchen is by far one of the most used rooms in your house ‚ the hub of your home. It is where you cook and prepare meals, eat, and sometimes just hang out and talk. It is rare to have guests over, even for just a minute, and not go into the kitchen for at least a moment. For this reason, you always want your kitchen looking its best.

One of the primary characteristics that you want your kitchen to have is that warm, homey feeling. You want it to be comfortable and inviting. A common method of achieving this feeling is through painting; however painting the kitchen can often be a challenge. Depending on the layout of your kitchen, there may be many cabinets and appliances in the way that would make painting difficult. In this case, there are two options. The first option is to pick one, relatively simple wall to paint as an accent. It helps give the room a focal point. The other option is a wallpaper border . There are many fun, classy wallpaper borders to fit any kitchen style and it is much easier, and faster than painting.

Kitchen cabinets are a necessity for every home; however after a time they begin to show their wear, especially if you live in an older home. Unfortunately replacing cabinets can be a very expensive endeavor; depending on the size and style. There are a couple things that you can do to breath new life into your old cabinets . First, you can sand them down and refinish or repaint them. Not only is it good for the wood but it can also enhance the style and design in your kitchen. Once they are refinished, complete their new look with some new handles. There are many different styles out there so have fun choosing something new. Plus they are considerably cheaper than new cabinets.

Perhaps one of the hardest decisions to make when decorating your kitchen is deciding what to do with the windows and picking the right kind of next day blinds window treatments. One of the biggest considerations you’ll want to take is the size and location of the windows. If you only have a small over the sink window, perhaps something simple like a window valence or shade would be ideal. On the other hand, if you have multiple large windows you may want to invest in some Next Day Blinds vertical blinds or shutters. You will also want to take into account the amount of direct sunlight comes in through the windows and how much you want coming into your home.

Even on the smallest budget, you can have your dream kitchen in no time.

Philadelphia Mutter Museum

Monday, June 21st, 2010

For those who like to keep their adventures in other cities interesting, and if there’s a taste for the unusual, then a visit to the College of Physicians in Philadelphia is definitely something that should be in the cards. It’s been here since 1787, and like everything in Philadelphia, there’s more history here than anyone could ever imagine. They have a great track record for educating future doctors, to be sure, but the interesting thing for visitors is more likely to be found in the Mutter Museum .

Here, there are more medical oddities than most people could ever look at in the course of an afternoon. But when the dust settles after traveling to the city, getting situated in the local hotel, Philadelphia has a plethora of attractions. It’s a city with a lot of culture, where many traditions and histories mix and blend in the present. The past is also well worth excavating, and there might not be a more fascinating place than the medical past.

At the Mutter, there are historic photographs and old medical equipment, including a real iron lung, that start to give an uneasy sense of how far the science has come. It’s hard not to see the history of medicine as barbaric in earlier times, but after a little while, it starts to seem that the present will someday be the past, and suddenly everything becomes uneasy in a rather splendid way.

There are large sections of the museum that are certainly not for the squeamish, with specimens of very unusual pathologies. There are also plenty of skulls of people who have died in strange ways, and a tour of the medical oddities of the country’s presidents. Perhaps one of the more startling things on display is the body of a soap woman. She had reached a certain weight, and the chemical properties of her internal workings were just right, so that she actually began to turn into hardened soap.

The rest of the city is extremely refreshing after seeing this museum, and it’s a visit that only another attraction can help one forget. Fortunately, the city has plenty of things to choose from.

Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Just minutes away from downtown Seattle, in the neighborhood known as Phinney Ridge, you’ll discover the Woodland Park Zoo , 92 acres that feature almost 1, 100 animals and 300 different species. From the smallest to the largest creatures, insects to the African elephant, you and your family will be able to explore a number of intriguing spaces, such as the Tropical Rain Forest Building, the Northern Trail, the Day Exhibit, and the Zoomazium.

The 92 acres are divided into various bioclimate zones, simulating different habitats, including the humid conditions of tropical rain forests, to coastal deserts, to more temperate rain forests, such as the ones in the Pacific Northwest. In the Tropical Rain Forest Building which contains the Tropical Rain Forest dome, you’ll witness birds from South America freely flying, ocelots, snakes and poison dart frogs; you’ll find outdoor exhibits of red ruffed lemurs, colobus monkeys, gorillas, and jaguars. In the temperate rain forest, you’ll find exhibits of red pandas, Chilean flamingos, and Asian cranes, as well as wetland waterfowl, Bug World, and the Family Farm exhibit, which features miniature cows, sheep, goats, and chickens.

Along the Northern Trail, you’ll see a replica of Alaska’s tundra and Taiga region, including an inside viewing area for river otters that play and swim underwater, as well as bears that hunt for trout. In the Tundra Center, there’s a 70 foot long curving mural that displays the Alaskan tundra and a video about native people in the area. The Day Exhibit focuses on reptiles and amphibians, featuring creatures from gila monsters to king cobras.

While it might be a matter of debate if toddlers like king cobras, everyone from the toddler to children eight years old, should enjoy the Zoomazium, which is a nature-themed play space. Kids can climb a “mountain,” here, climb a gigantic tree and meet animals, and enjoy special presentations and performances specifically designed for them.

After a full day of the zoo — summer hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily; winter hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. — it’s a good thing to return to some of the top Seattle hotels , either for a well-deserved night’s rest or to prepare to go out to enjoy Seattle’s night life.

Hiring a Lawyer

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

No matter what the charge is, assault , dui, sexual assault or possession of drugs, it doesn’t matter, the process to hire a Phoenix lawyer for criminal defense is the same. You will want to call a few lawyers and you will want to give them each a brief interview. Find out a few things about them such as their record for defending people in your situation. Be specific in your type of situation , even small differences like alcohol verses drugs can be a big difference in the case. If they regularly do alcohol cases and haven’t yet won a drug related case you might want to think about hiring someone else.

Find out if your potential lawyers offer free consultations. You don’t want to have to pay to talk to them if you decide that you don’t want to hire them. Even some of the best and most expensive lawyers will offer you a free consultation to let you have a chance to get to know them and find out if you really want to hire them. Even with these types of lawyers you may not want to hire them for certain cases. Many lawyers will specialize in only one topic and should not be hired for another topic. In that case one hopes that they are worth the price tag that comes with them. If they aren’t the right lawyer for you they may know someone who would be good for the case. It may even be someone within the same law office. Many law office s will keep lawyers of various types so that they can cover a larger range of cases.

Be comfortable with your attorney. If you aren’t comfortable with them you won’t want to give them all the facts. Just because a rowdy raunchy lawyer says that he is the best does not mean that you have to go with him if you are not comfortable with that. You need to be able to let your lawyer know everything and if you are dreading seeing your lawyer each time you have an appointment you will end up forgetting to tell them some important facts.

Adding Value to Your Home

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

We live in an age of speed, change, and motion. Everyone is always rushing to get somewhere; whether it is meeting up with friends, getting to a meeting, or achieving a new position. We are always on the go. It is this change in attitude that has led many people to continually seek change and improvement every few years. We no longer stay at the same job for 20 or 30 years, or even in the same house.
For many a house is more than a place to live ‚– and for some even more than a home. It is an investment opportunity. Since most people only live in their house for 5-10 years, it makes sense that you would do what you can to increase the value and the return on your investment while you are there; especially now with home values so low.

One of the best investments that you can make in your home is installing dual pane windows . Even though they can be expensive, they are worth the investment. Dual-pane windows cut down on a substantial amount of the energy lost through the windows. In the summer they block the heat from coming in and in the winter they help keep it in. They even block a lot of the noise you often hear from traffic and people outside.

Speaking of windows, installing custom window treatments from Next Day blinds is also a nice addition to your home that can help add value. From blinds and shades to shutters and panel tracks, Next Day Blinds has many options to choose from that are both decorative, practical and energy efficient.

An easy way to add value and appeal to your home, especially if you are looking to sell in the near future, is to update the landscaping

Coconuts in Florida

Monday, June 7th, 2010

There are many good reasons that people in Florida are smiling. It’s the abundant sunshine that can be a boon to any bad attitude, changing a dark mood into a bright disposition (it’s not an accident that such dispositions are called “sunny”). It’s the proximity to the ocean, which has enormous benefits, not only for its sheer beauty, but the gravitational pull on the tides can actually help to readjust the inner rhythms of the body. It could also be the clubs, the restaurants, and the reputation for having some of the world’s best resorts. Florida has a lot to offer, but for some, it has everything to do with the coconut.

There are plenty of places in the world where one can find the fruit, to be sure, but it also seems apparent that all of these places are known for the sunny dispositions of the people. In Florida, it’s no different, and there are cooks and chefs here who can do things with the meat that are close to heavenly. The coconut patty treat is possibly so close to paradise that it’s halfway in another world, and one can find it all over the state. It’s made by combining shredded coconut with butter, sugar (it has no natural sucrose, although it’s wonderfully sweet on its own), and vanilla, pressed into balls and then usually covered with chocolate.

There are other ways of encountering the coconut here in its natural habitat, however. Florida coconuts , like anywhere else in the world, start off green. At this stage, they are useful for the juice, which is plentiful, and it’s a fantastic treat to try a fresh one cut open right on the beach. They gradually turn brown as the juice is drying out, and when it’s not completely dry, they are ready for the meat to be consumed. The husks can be messy, and also very useful, where the fiber can be woven into cloth and rope, and they have a number of other valuable uses. It’s an all-purpose fruit, and their ubiquity here is enough to make anyone smile.
